PICTURE PUZZLE SPEAKING ACTIVITY Original proposal for adult English learners. No measured language benefit is claimed. Use one screen and one input controller. Read aloud together. TEN EXPRESSIONS 1. I can see a red cup on the left. 2. The notebook is near the right-hand edge. 3. The yellow cup is in the lower-left corner. 4. The bottle is above the notebook. 5. There is a gap between the cup and the notebook. 6. This piece shows part of a curved handle. 7. Would you repeat the last detail? 8. Are you referring to the red cup? 9. Please explain where the piece should go. 10. Is that the position you had in mind? FIVE FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS Which object is closest to that piece? What colour is the part you mean? Where is it in relation to the blue notebook? What can you see along its edge? Does the reference picture support that location? ORIGINAL SCRIPTED DIALOGUE The loose piece and failed connection are hypothetical. Speaker | I can see part of a cup handle on this piece. Listener | Are you referring to the red cup? Speaker | Yes. The red cup is to the left of the blue notebook. Listener | Where is the handle in relation to the cup? Speaker | It is on the cup’s right side, toward the notebook. Listener | I think this piece belongs in that gap. Is that the position you had in mind? Speaker | Yes. Try it there, then we can check the picture. Listener | It did not connect. Let’s look at the curved edge again. READ-ALOUD ACTIVITY SCRIPT Introduce the task. We will use this picture to practise describing places and checking meaning. We can finish the activity with the board unfinished. Each of us will give a short description. Look at the reference. Let’s name two objects we both recognize. Agree that left and right mean the picture’s left and right. Choose a phrase you want to try. Describe and listen. I will describe a detail on a piece and where I think it belongs. Please ask a question before moving it. We will check that we mean the same object. Check and change roles. After the move, say what you can see. A failed connection gives us another detail to discuss. Now you describe, and I will listen and control the pointer. Finish with a description. Put the pointer down. Give three sentences about the whole picture, including one position and one visible detail. Tell your partner which explanation was clear and ask about anything uncertain. This sheet does not create a classroom account, record speech or score language.
