Quick summary

For a first entry, read the speed puzzling competition rules for your exact event and round. This guide uses WJPC 2026 as its main example, flags a published time-limit discrepancy and gives you a worksheet for the questions that remain.

Key takeaways

  • 01Keep each organizer and edition attached to its rules.
  • 02Resolve conflicting instructions with the organizer.
  • 03Use the downloadable worksheet alongside the full official documents.

Read the rules for one named event and year

Speed puzzling competition rules need an organizer, edition and division attached. We checked the official 2026 World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship pages on November 3, 2026. The September event has already happened. This is a guide to reading its documents and preparing questions for a future entry.

Keep the rulebook beside the schedule and the page for your actual round. The WJPC 2026 schedule places the individual final on September 20 at noon, with 500 physical pieces and 75 minutes. Its rules page gives that final a 60-minute limit. Those published figures disagree.

The official individual-final classification also labels the round as 500 pieces and 75 minutes. That supports the schedule entry, but it does not tell us why the rulebook differs. We have not obtained an organizer explanation. Do not silently turn either number into a rule for next year.

When documents conflict, send the organizer the two links, identify the exact division and ask which instruction governs. Keep the answer with your event notes. An old screenshot without its event name or date is a weak basis for packing or planning a round.

Check the start and finish procedure

WJPC 2026 requires arrival 15 minutes before a round. Its one-minute unsealing period excludes opening the box. Competitors cannot use their own sharp opening tools.

Raise a hand near completion if unnoticed. The rules require an audible TIME or STOP, judge verification and a result that cannot then be changed. Check the recorded time shown by the judge.

Read those verbs carefully when watching a round. Unsealing, opening, assembling and declaring completion are separate actions. For your own event, mark the action that starts the timed task and the action that ends your attempt. Ask about an unclear instruction before it becomes a decision made under the clock.

Understand unfinished scoring and permitted help

WJPC 2026 counts correctly joined groups of at least three when time expires. Its separate missing-piece rule adds five seconds per piece, except contiguous missing pieces treated as a manufacturing defect.

WJPC 2026 prohibits digital image enlargement and outside assistance. Its 500-piece allowance is two trays up to A3. Check the full accessory section before packing.

For comparison, USAJPA’s 2026 Nationals results page says joined groups of two or more count, and describes a maximum ten-second missing-piece penalty even when pieces are found later. It also requires judge authorization between puzzles in multi-puzzle divisions, with the first puzzle completely off the table before the next box opens.

Those USAJPA 2026 jigsaw puzzle contest rules cannot supply a missing detail in a WJPC instruction. A two-piece pair is a concrete reason to keep scoring notes separate. Our comparison is limited to the provisions reproduced on USAJPA’s results page, not a review of every clause in its linked rulebook.

Build a speed puzzling event checklist

The speed puzzling event checklist below is our original preparation aid, separate from any official form. Use it to capture decisions from your chosen event. Fill in the source link and the date you checked it. Leave an unresolved answer visibly blank.

StageConfirm for your chosen roundYour record
Before travellingEdition, division, assigned heat and current instructionsSave the source links and any organizer clarification
Before taking your seatReporting time, permitted equipment and access arrangementsWrite the arrival plan and list what you will bring
At the startWhat may be unsealed, opened or touched, and on whose signalNote the announced procedure
At the finishHow to call a judge and declare completionVerify the recorded result
If time runs outWhat counts, who checks it and how queries are handledKeep the result and the route for questions

Use the empty worksheet for a future event only after replacing the edition and sources. Keep questions short enough for an organizer to answer precisely. Asking whether a particular item is permitted is more useful than asking whether you can bring your usual setup.

Download the blank event checklist.

For a USAJPA 2026 logistics example, its attendee page directs competitors to collect an Entry Badge using the ticket QR code and arrive 15 to 30 minutes before a heat, earlier if badge collection is still needed. It says unoccupied tables are filled from the walk-up waitlist five minutes before the start. Arrival instructions deserve their own place beside the solving rules.

Separate official competition from browser practice

JigsawPuzzle.pro offers casual browser puzzles. Its difficulty settings are Easy with 12 pieces, Medium with 24, Hard with 48 and Expert with 96. The physical 500-piece event examples above do not describe settings available here. There is no official competition mode, judging service or championship ranking on this site.

You can choose a gallery image, drag pieces and consult the reference picture. Those controls let you explore a picture at a comfortable count. They do not reproduce the equipment, supervision or scoring described in an organizer’s documents. Keep any personal browser result labelled with its own activity.

Before entering a physical event, take any unresolved document conflict to its organizer and keep the reply with the current instructions for your round.
